How the Dodge Durango Brings Life Back to the Family SUV

Going against competitors that have conformed to conventional standards, the Dodge Durango holds strong in its convictions. The Durango does a lot of things that you would expect a three-row SUV to do, but it offers a lot that of surprises for a vehicle in its class.

Surpassing Expectations of a Three-Row SUV

Seating Options

Dodge is looking to change the market, but it knows what customers are looking for in a vehicle. The Dodge Durango sticks to conventions when it comes to the interior, offering you many different seat configurations so that you never have too many or too few seats. The standard option is for seven passengers in a 2-3-2 configuration, but you can swap out that middle row for Captain's Chairs if you tend to travel with adults or growing teenagers. If you find yourself not filling all seven seats - or six for that matter - you can choose to get rid of those back two seats entirely if you go with the Durango SXT trim. This will open up the most space for your passengers as well as the gear that they want to bring along.

Cargo Space

Like all of the best SUVs, the Durango offers an ample amount of cargo space. If you are looking at using the 2-3-2 configuration of seats all the time, you are looking at 17 cubic feet of passenger space behind that last set. Clearing out or folding down that last row brings you up to 48 cubic feet - a major improvement. For the most cargo space you'll need to fold down all of the seats, accessing the convenient loading floor that offers up to 85 cubic feet of cargo space, putting this midsize SUV in second place for its class.

Standard Features

With the most innovative technology being available for your family, Dodge has ensured you are well-equipped in the Durango. Standard features like three-zone climate control and keyless ignition are available in the base models, but move up to higher trim levels and you are looking at a heated steering wheel, ventilated front seats, a sunroof, heated front- and middle- rows, and so much more. While the most road-hardened drivers might think these are too luxurious or lavish, it is important to remember that your family trip can take you to many different places - possibly many different climates - and the Durango makes sure all of your passengers can stay comfortable, letting you focus more on the road than if you had to hear all of the complaints from the other six people in the vehicle.

The Unexpected Side of the Durango

Power

Dodge is known for producing some of the most powerful vehicles that you will find; decades of this will not be lost when you are choosing the Durango. The most basic trim levels are the SXT, GT, and Citadel, coming with a 3.6-Liter V6 engine that makes 293 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. For other manufacturers, this might have been enough, but Dodge said "more."

Moving up to the Durango R/T comes with a standard 5.7-Liter V8 engine that puts out 360 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque: also available as an upgrade option in the Citadel trim if you didn't want all of the sporty upgrades like a Sport Steering System, Sport-Tuned Suspension, performance hood design, and several other features. Once again, other manufacturers would consider this a generous option for their SUV models, but Dodge still cried out "More!"

This is where Dodge thought would be a good place to draw the line: 475 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque from a 6.4-Liter V8 in the Durango SRT. Those of you still reading must be interested in powerful options, so you'll be happy to hear that this gives the Durango a 4.4-second zero-to-sixty time, putting it on par with sports cars while still being able to load gear and haul your family. Those of you who might be worried about controlling such power will be glad to know you get a driving lesson at the SRT Track Experience at Bondurant Racing School in Arizona with your purchase of the Durango SRT.

Bold Design

The Durango has no shame in showing that it will be a powerful behemoth when you are in the driver's seat. It holds onto the strong design that many SUVs have tried to hide in recent years. The Durango keeps its history in the open, letting you know that it was once only chosen by a select demographic that looked for the most difficult roads to endure - and that it was powerful enough to do more than endure: it conquered those roads.

While it does seem a little loud or cocky, it is humble enough to accept change where it is needed, making a platform switch to become more appealing to a larger audience through a smoother, more controlled drive. This gave a once clunky ride the smoothness, fuel economy, and premium feel that allowed it to compete in the SUV market that we see today.

Safety

Unlike the previous two traits, this one is unexpected in a different way. The Durango lacks a lot of the standard safety features that you would find on other SUVs. For instance, if you wanted any radar-based technologies such as adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, a forward collision warning system with automatic braking, lane departure warning, or others, you would need to choose a Technology Group Package to add them. Even the blind-spot monitoring system only comes standard with the Safety/Security and Convenience Group Package.

Front and rear parking sensors and a rearview camera can assist you as standard when you choose the GT and Citadel, but that is about it for standard active safety features.

A Full View of the Durango

All of these features - expected and unexpected - come together to give you the Dodge Durango. We applaud it as an overall vehicle, bringing us the power, design, and dedication to the past that Dodge holds so dear. While it is disheartening to see Dodge miss key standard features, it makes up for it with a some pleasant unexpected surprises.
